Bird Banding
at Caddo Lake

April 14, 2001

SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2001.  Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the bird-banding effort.  Other participants included Dorothy Metzler of Longview, Peggy Harding of Kilgore, and Tom Walker of Jefferson.  We had a very large number of visitors from Houston, Galveston, Dallas, Arlington, Jefferson, et cetera.  They included:  Carl Votour and Teri Taylor,  John & Cindy Bartos (and their dog, Sonny Boy), Ann Derby, Carole Ann Boyd, Barbara Hudson, Margie Bivens, Tom & Patty Malek, Heather Malek and friend Jimmy, Matt & Kay Dunaway, Billie Nell Mann, and Jim & Connie Robertson.  A total of 54 birds were caught (25 new birds; 19 retraps; 10 unbanded).

Location:  The activities took place just west of Caddo Lake in Marion County on Boots Walker Road (near Jefferson, Texas).

Weather conditions:  Heavy cloudiness.  The morning began with temperatures in the mid-sixties and it had warmed to near 80 by afternoon.Red-eyed Vireo photo by Dorothy Metzler 14-Apr-01

Time:  Started at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 4:15 p.m. CDT.

Number of Nets:  Eleven (11)

Special Notes:

We caught our first Red-eyed Vireo (pictured at right).

We retrapped a male Painted Bunting that we had banded a year earlier on April 22, 2000 (pictured below).

We retrapped two White-throated Sparrows that we had banded 3 years earlier in January 1998.

We retrapped a Northern Cardinal that we had banded 3.5 years ago in October 1997.

We retrapped a White-eyed Vireo that we had banded 2 years ago in April 1999.

Hummingbirds are not banded by us.

We were out of bands that are sized for Northern Cardinals.  We had to leave any new catches of that species unbanded.  That size band is on back order with U.S. Fish & Wildlife's banding office in Laurel, Maryland, who is our supplier.
